What is Zantac?
Zantac, also known as Ranitidine, is a drug classified as a histamine-2 blocker. It works by reducing excessive acid in the stomach that is produced from overeating, eating spicy foods, or consuming too much alcohol. When taken, the drug works within minutes and provides relief against bloating, heartburn, and abdominal pain. In higher doses, it can be prescribed to treat more serious illnesses such as stomach ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Why is Zantac Dangerous?
In September of 2019, Zantac was permanently removed from the market by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after lab tests identified higher than acceptable levels of N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). This organic compound is considered a possible carcinogen to humans. While the connection has not been unequivocally established, it has been proven in animals and is highly suspected to be a threat to humans as well.
According to one study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2011 that tracked over 23,000 participants, nearly 3,500 participants who took food with NDMA were diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer over the next 11 years.
